It’s a rather saddening news to hear that our forward, Odion Ighalo has retired from his place as a Super Eagles player and captain. He announced his retirement following the Super Eagles’ third place victory over Tunisia at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Ighalo, who is recorded to be the highest goal scorer in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, informed coach Gernot Rohr of his decision before leaving to join his club in China immediately after the game.
This comes as a surprise to many people seeing as Ighalo had a late bloom with the Super Eagles. But his reasons are not far-fetched. Sources state that he had originally discussed with the coach before the third place match.
John Obi mikelwho is 32 years also retired from the Super Eagles saying “At the age of 32, it’s time for me to retire from the national team and let the youth take over, we’ve done an amazing job by securing a bronze medal at AFCON 2019. Whilst Mikel’s retirement reason is obviously clear, the Chinese Club’s forward deepens than what meets the eye.
Ighalo recounts saying that the constant abuse was taking a toll on his young family but he was advised to keep it under wraps for the moment. This is coming after so many backlashes after under-performed matches.
After the game, he gave his jersey as a souvenir to the coach, said his goodbyes and left,” a source stated.
Odion Ighalo made 35 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 16 goals.
He was also top scorer through the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with five goals.
